Voltaren® (diclofenac sodium) is used to treat several conditions related to pain, inflammation, swelling, and stiffness. It belongs to a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which work by inhibiting the action of certain pain-causing hormones in the body.
Specifically, this drug is approved to relieve:
- Osteoarthritis symptoms, including pain, stiffness, and swelling
- Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms
- Short-term and long-term symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis.
While regular Voltaren tablets are approved for all three uses, Voltaren-XR tablets are approved only for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Keep in mind that it may take several weeks for the full effects of the drug to be felt. Diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation are some of the most common side effects.
