Voltaren Gel Drug Information

Voltaren® Gel (diclofenac gel) is a prescription drug that is approved for treating osteoarthritis, especially arthritis of the knees and hands. It comes in one strength -- 1 percent (10 mg of diclofenac sodium per gram of gel). The gel is typically applied to the skin four times a day. The medicine is manufactured by Novartis Consumer Health, Inc., and there are currently no generic versions available.

Although most people do not have any problems while taking this drug, Voltaren Gel is not suitable for everyone. For instance, you may not be able to safely use this medication if you have certain medical conditions, such as asthma, heart disease, or a bleeding problem. You also may not be able to take it if you are currently taking certain other medications.

Apply the gel to clean, dry, unbroken skin. The skin should be free of cuts, infections, or rashes. In clinical studies, the most common side effects of this product were skin reactions at the application site.
