Arthrotec Medication and Osteoarthritis

Available by prescription only, Arthrotec® (diclofenac/misoprostol) is a medication prescribed to treat osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in certain people. Specifically, this combination medicine is approved to treat the symptoms of these types of arthritis in adults, while also helping to prevent stomach or intestinal ulcers in people who have an increased risk for developing this problem.

Arthrotec contains two medications. The diclofenac sodium (Voltaren®, Voltaren®-XR) component is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It can help relieve symptoms of arthritis, such as pain and swelling. However NSAIDs can increase the risk for ulcers and potentially serious internal bleeding.

The other medication in Arthrotec is misoprostol (Cytotec®), which is a prostaglandin. It helps reduce the risk of getting an ulcer from NSAID use. Because Arthrotec contains misoprostol, it may be a good choice for people who have an increased risk for ulcers and complications from ulcers.
