Non-Medication Celebrex AlternativesMedications are not the only alternatives to Celebrex. Some people find relief from other sources, many of which are easier to tolerate than medications. Your healthcare provider may recommend heat, braces, or even massage to help alleviate and prevent pain. In some situations, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) devices may be helpful. Exercise and weight control can also be effective at relieving stress on your joints, helping to relieve and prevent pain. Sometimes, surgery may be necessary. For example, the surgeon may perform an operation to remove the synovium (synovectomy); realign the joint (osteotomy); or, in advanced cases, replace the damaged joint with an artificial one (arthroplasty).
Hyaluronic acid injections into the joint can be effective, but the effects are not permanent. Often, these injections will serve to "buy time" until more drastic treatments, such as surgery, are performed. These injections are not considered medications, as they work by mechanically improving the joint fluid, helping to relieve arthritis pain. These products include:
Many people seek other ways of treating their pain, such as with special diets or supplements. These methods may not be harmful in and of themselves. However, to date, research has shown that only a few of these alternative treatments are actually helpful. For example, acupuncture has been shown to help relieve arthritis pain in people with knee osteoarthritis (see Acupuncture for Osteoarthritis). On the other hand, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, two natural substances found in and around cartilage cells, have not consistently shown to be helpful.
Some alternative or complementary approaches may help you cope with or reduce some of the stress of living with a chronic illness. It is important to tell your healthcare provider if you are using alternative therapies. If your healthcare provider feels the approach has value and will not harm you, it can be incorporated into your treatment plan. However, you should not neglect your regular healthcare or treatment of serious symptoms.
