Celebrex® (
celecoxib) is a nonprescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (
NSAID) that is also classified as a COX-2 inhibitor. This means that it works by targeting a specific enzyme in the body known to play a role in pain and inflammation.
Children can use Celebrex; however, it is only approved to treat
juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. This medication is not licensed to treat any other conditions in this age group. The dose prescribed will depend largely on the child's weight.
When giving Celebrex to a child, if he or she has difficulty swallowing the capsules, the capsules can be opened and the contents sprinkled on a spoonful of cool or room-temperature applesauce. This should be swallowed immediately and followed with water.
