Celebrex® (celecoxib) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of various conditions characterized by pain and inflammation. These uses (or indications) for Celebrex include the treatment of:
- Acute pain, such as after an injury or muscle strain
- Painful menstrual periods
- Different types of arthritis.
As a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) -- more specifically, as a COX-2 inhibitor -- Celebrex works by targeting a specific enzyme that plays a role in pain and inflammation in the body. It comes in capsule form, and is generally taken once or twice a day.
Research studies indicate that Celebrex may also be useful in the treatment of certain types of cancer, such as melanoma and lung cancer. However, this has yet to be determined with any certainty.
