Cod Liver Oil Dosage

Because research is still in its early stages, there is no dosage of cod liver oil that has been established as both safe and effective. Some studies, however, have used doses of 20 mL or 30 mL per day. Until more information is available, it is probably best to follow the dosing directions on the label of your particular cod liver oil product.

Cod Liver Oil Dosage: An Introduction

The best dose of cod liver oil for most uses has not yet been determined. Research is only in its early stages, too early to recommend dosages that are both safe and effective.

What Is a Reasonable Dose for Cod Liver Oil?

Studies of cod liver oil have used doses of 20 mL or 30 mL of cod liver oil per day. However, the best therapeutic dosage for cod liver oil has not yet been clearly established for any use. Therefore, it is reasonable to follow the directions on the label of your particular product. Do not exceed these recommendations unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Cod liver oil contains quite a bit of vitamins D and A, and it is possible to take too much of these vitamins. Typically, 20 mL of cod liver oil contains about 15,000 IU (International Units) of vitamin A and 1500 IU of vitamin D. This may be enough to cause problems due to vitamin A toxicity or vitamin D toxicity in some individuals.

General Information on Your Cod Liver Oil Dosage

Considerations for people taking cod liver oil include the following:

Make sure to choose a cod liver oil supplement that is made by a reputable manufacturer. Your pharmacist can help you choose a good supplement.
  • Taking cod liver oil with meals may help to reduce some of the common cod liver oil side effects, such as a fishy aftertaste or belching. Also, starting with a low dose and slowly increasing it may also limit such side effects.
  • If you have any chronic health problems or take any prescription medications, you should check with your healthcare provider before taking cod liver oil.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or cod liver oil dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider.
