Dexamethasone Drug Interactions

Certain Diuretics
Dexamethasone can decrease the level of potassium in your blood. Certain diuretics also decrease potassium blood levels. Thus, if you are taking these medicines together, your healthcare provider should monitor your potassium levels and may prescribe a potassium supplement if necessary.

Certain Kinase Inhibitor Medications
Dexamethasone may decrease the levels of certain kinase inhibitors in your blood, potentially making them less effective. In general, these medications should not be taken together if possible. If taking them together cannot be avoided, your healthcare provider may choose to give you a higher dose of the kinase inhibitor.

CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The body breaks down dexamethasone using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Medications known as CYP 3A4 inducers can increase the activity of these enzymes. Combining dexamethasone with one of these drugs may decrease the level of dexamethasone in your body, perhaps making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely if you take these medications together and may increase your dexamethasone dosage if necessary.
