Dexamethasone Drug Interactions

Nifedipine
Dexamethasone may decrease the levels of nifedipine in your blood, which could make it less effective. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely if you take these medications together, and may increase your nifedipine dosage if necessary.

Nisoldipine
Dexamethasone may decrease the levels of nisoldipine in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. In general, these medications should not be used together. If you do take them together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely, and may increase your nisoldipine dosage if necessary.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
Combining NSAIDs with dexamethasone can increase your risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers. In addition, using NSAID eye drops with dexamethasone eye drops could slow down eye healing. Talk with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

P-Glycoprotein (Pgp) Inducers
P-glycoprotein is a natural protein that helps remove substances, such as medications, out of body tissues so that they can be removed through the urine or feces. Pgp helps remove dexamethasone from the body. Medications known as Pgp inducers increase the activity of Pgp.

Taking dexamethasone with one of these Pgp inducers causes dexamethasone to be removed from the body too quickly, potentially making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely if you take dexamethasone with a Pgp inducer to make sure it is working for you.

P-Glycoprotein (Pgp) Inhibitors
P-glycoprotein is a natural protein that helps remove substances, such as medications, out of the body tissues so that they can be excreted through the urine or feces. Pgp helps remove dexamethasone from the body. Medications known as Pgp inhibitors decrease the activity of Pgp.

Taking dexamethasone with one of these Pgp inhibitors causes dexamethasone to be removed more slowly, potentially increasing the amount of dexamethasone in your body. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely for dexamethasone side effects if you take it with a Pgp inhibitor.
