Dexamethasone is a prescription drug used for many different conditions, ranging from endocrine disorders to skin diseases to inflammatory bowel disorders. It resembles a naturally occurring hormone in the body, which makes it useful in cases where immune system suppression is required.
However, there are some off-label (unapproved) uses for dexamethasone. Nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy or surgery, for example, can be treated with this medication. Using a drug off-label does not mean it should not be used for this purpose -- it just means that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the medication for that purpose.
