Generic Diclofenac

Not all diclofenac products are available as a generic. Diclofenac tablets, extended-release tablets, and eye drops are currently available in generic form; all other products are only available as brand-name drugs. The generic forms of this medicine can be found in a number of different strengths.

Is a Generic Version of Diclofenac Available?

Diclofenac is an active ingredient in a number of different prescription medications. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Many, but not all, forms of diclofenac are available in generic form.

Generic Diclofenac Availability

The following diclofenac products are available in generic form:

Cataflam^® (diclofenac potassium 50 mg tablets)
Voltaren^® (diclofenac sodium 25, 50, and 75 mg tablets)
Voltaren^®-XR (diclofenac sodium extended-release 100 mg tablets)
Voltaren Ophthalmic^® (diclofenac sodium 0.1 percent eye drops).

The following products are not available in generic form at this time:

Zipsor^™ (diclofenac potassium 25 mg liquid-filled capsules)
Cambia^™ (diclofenac potassium 50 mg packets to be mixed with water)
Flector^® (diclofenac patch)
Voltaren^® Gel (diclofenac 1 percent gel)
Solaraze^® Gel (diclofenac 3 percent gel).

Are Diclofenac Products Interchangeable?

Technically, most diclofenac products are not interchangeable. Even diclofenac products in the same strength (such as Cataflam 50 mg tablets and Voltaren 50 mg tablets) are not interchangeable. This means that you will need a new prescription in order to change from one product to another (unless you are simply switching from a brand-name product to a generic one).
