Glucosamine, a dietary supplement, is best known for its effects on arthritis. By reducing inflammation, stimulating the cells that produce cartilage, and decreasing the production of the compounds that degrade cartilage, the supplement may be beneficial for treating osteoarthritis. At this point, however, it is not entirely clear if glucosamine really does work for this use. Some of the side effects that may be attributed to glucosamine products include diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.
