There are a couple of things to keep in mind when talking about foods that cause gout. First of all, there is no bad meal. In other words, eating shellfish or meat that are high in purines once in a while is not going to cause gout. However, eating these "foods that cause gout" on a regular basis can increase your risk. Secondly, this study looked at people with no history of gout. It did not study people with gout to see if these foods would play a role in decreasing another gout attack. People with gout should follow their recommended gout diet (see Gout Diet for a recommended diet for gout).
