Krystexxa and Pregnancy

There is little information available about whether it is safe for pregnant women to receive Krystexxa (pegloticase). However, this medication is used to treat gout, a condition that does not commonly occur in women of reproductive age. A healthcare provider may prescribe this medication to a pregnant woman if the benefits to the woman outweigh the risks to the fetus.

Can Pregnant Women Receive Krystexxa?

Krystexxa® (pegloticase) is a prescription gout medication. At this time, there is very little information available to determine whether this medication is safe for use during pregnancy.

It is unlikely that more information about Krystexxa and pregnancy will become available anytime soon. Krystexxa is used to treat gout, a condition which is not common in women of reproductive age.

What Is Pregnancy Category C?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans, but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

Medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

Krystexxa has not been studied in any pregnant women and has been studied very little in pregnant animals. Although preliminary animal studies indicate that this drug probably does not increase the risk of birth defects (even at very high doses), there is simply not enough information to suggest that this drug is safe (or unsafe) for use during pregnancy.

It is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines in the same way that humans do. Therefore, a pregnancy Category C medicine may be given to a pregnant woman if the healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.
