Krystexxa Dosage

When using Krystexxa to treat gout, the standard dose is 8 mg given intravenously once every two weeks. This dosage amount is the same for everyone, regardless of age or weight. This medication is administered over a period of at least two hours. Your healthcare provider may want to monitor you for an hour afterwards to watch for any infusion reactions.

An Introduction to Dosing With Krystexxa

There is only one standard dose of Krystexxa® (pegloticase), regardless of your age or weight. As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Krystexxa Dosage for Gout

The recommended Krystexxa dosage is 8 mg given intravenously (by IV) once every two weeks. You should be given medications such as a corticosteroid and an antihistamine before each dose of Krystexxa to help prevent allergic reactions and "infusion reactions." Some of these reactions may include:

  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain.

Because Krystexxa can cause gout flares, it is recommended that you take colchicine (Colcrys®) or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) starting one week before the first dose and continuing for at least six months, unless there is a medical reason you should not take such medications.

General Information on Receiving Krystexxa

Some considerations for people receiving Krystexxa include the following:

  • The IV is given over a period of at least two hours. If you appear to be developing an infusion reaction, your healthcare provider may slow the IV down or may stop it altogether.

  • Because infusion reactions can be slow to develop, your healthcare provider may want to monitor you for an hour after each dose.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage of Krystexxa, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
