Flurbiprofen is a prescription drug that can be used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Besides relieving arthritis pain, the medicine is also effective at reducing fever and treating pain related to bone, muscle, or tendon injury and inflammation. The medicine comes in a tablet form and is available in several strengths. Common side effects include heartburn, diarrhea, abdominal pain (or stomach pain), and nausea.

What Is Flurbiprofen?

Flurbiprofen (Ansaid®) is a prescription medicine used for the relief of mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, and/or stiffness caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It belongs to a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs for short.

Possible Side Effects

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with flurbiprofen. Yet not everyone who takes flurbiprofen will have problems. When people do develop side effects, in many cases they are minor, meaning that they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
 
Common flurbiprofen side effects include, but are not limited to:
 
Less common but serious side effects may include:
 
  • Cardiovascular problems, including a heart attack or stroke
  • Stomach or intestinal problems, including bleeding, an ulcer, or a hole (known as a perforation)
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney problems, including kidney failure
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Vision problems
  • Allergic reactions
  • Unexplained rash.
     
These possible side effects are shared with most NSAIDs and can lead to life-threatening complications or even loss of life.
