Now Playing: What Results Can You Expect From Synovectomy?
Video Text
Following this procedure, most people experience a reduction in their pain, locking, popping or swelling. You may not find this to be true immediately after surgery, but after a month or two of physical therapy your symptoms should be better.
Good results, meaning that pain is decreased and your range of motion is improved, are achieved in the majority of patients at 6 months. Most patients still maintain these good results at 2 years, and over half of the patients have good results at 4 years.
Factors that will affect your overall results include having multiple problems inside the knee, such as an inflamed synovium and a torn meniscus, together. If a medical condition such as rheumatoid arthritis produced the inflamed synovium, the results will depend on how well the disease is controlled. However, the swelling will often return after a certain period of time.
Because individual situations can vary, you and your doctor should discuss any questions you have regarding your particular situation. It is important that your expectations match your doctor's expectations.
