There are currently no generic Vimovo (naproxen/esomeprazole magnesium) products available. The first patent for Vimovo is set to expire in May 2014, which is the earliest date that a generic version could become available. For some people, taking brand-name Vimovo may be less expensive than taking the two active ingredients in the drug as separate pills.
Vimovo is made by Patheon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for AstraZeneca, LP. There are no generic versions of Vimovo available at this time.
When Will a Generic Version Be Available?
The first patent for Vimovo is currently set to expire in May 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period of Vimovo. This could include such things as lawsuits or new patents for specific Vimovo uses.
What About Taking Naproxen and Esomeprazole Separately?
Any time a new combination medication becomes available, people wonder whether the combination provides any cost savings. There are many factors that come into play (such as the pricing your pharmacy chooses and your particular insurance plan), so it can be difficult to predict whether using the combination product or taking the two drugs (naproxen and esomeprazole) separately will be less expensive for any given individual.
