Generic Naprelan (Cont.)

Is Naproxen Sodium a Generic Naprelan?

No, it isn't. Naproxen sodium is the active ingredient in Naprelan, but it is not a generic version of Naprelan. People often confuse the active ingredient of a drug with its "generic name." What can be even more confusing is that there are generic Naproxen Sodium tablets available. Generic naproxen sodium is based on an original patent by Roche Pharmaceuticals for a medicine sold under the brand names Anaprox® and Anaprox® DS. Naprelan differs from these generic naproxen sodium forms because the naproxen sodium in Naprelan is a controlled-release form.

Generic naproxen sodium is currently manufactured by several companies, including Sandoz, Teva Pharmaceuticals, and Watson Pharmaceuticals. It comes in a number of strengths, including:

  • Naproxen Sodium 275 mg
  • Naproxen Sodium 550 mg (equivalent to Anaprox DS).
