Naproxen Sodium Uses

Several conditions related to pain, inflammation, and stiffness can be treated with naproxen sodium. It can also be used for arthritis symptoms and pain relief associated with muscle strain, tendonitis, and general pain. The medication should not be used in children under the age of 12, unless a healthcare provider prescribes it. However, use of naproxen sodium may extend to children two years of age and older with juvenile arthritis symptoms.

An Overview of Naproxen Sodium Uses

Naproxen sodium (brand names include Aleve^®, Anaprox^®, or Naprelan^®) is a medication that has been licensed to treat several conditions related to pain, inflammation, fever, and stiffness.

Specific uses for naproxen sodium include the following:

Pain relief, such as for pain following a procedure, from straining a muscle, or from inflammation in a tendon (tendonitis) or bursa (bursitis). Naproxen sodium can also be used to treat general pain, such as knee pain, back pain, or foot pain.
Treatment of arthritis symptoms, including pain, stiffness, and swelling. Naproxen sodium can be used to treat several different types of arthritis, including:

Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Juvenile arthritis (also known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis)
Ankylosing spondylitis
Gout.

However, the medication does not cure these types of arthritis, nor does it change their progression.

Treatment of painful menstrual periods.

Naproxen sodium may also be combined with other medications in several common cold, allergy, and flu products to help relieve common cold symptoms, such as fever and aches and pains.
