How Does Naproxen Work?

Naproxen and other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) work by inhibiting the action of certain hormones, called prostaglandins, that cause inflammation and pain in the body. By blocking the effects of prostaglandins, naproxen is useful at:
 
  • Reducing pain related to bone, muscle, or tendon injury or inflammation
  • Reducing fever
  • Alleviating pain and joint swelling associated with different forms of arthritis and other conditions.
 

Uses for Naproxen in Children

Naproxen can be used in children over the age of two for the treatment of juvenile arthritis symptoms. In addition, over-the-counter naproxen can be used in children age 12 and older for relief of pain and fever.
 

Is Naproxen Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend naproxen for treating something other than the conditions discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are several off-label naproxen uses. These include the treatment of:
