Orencia and Breastfeeding

It is not known whether breastfeeding and Orencia is a safe combination because no human studies have been conducted at this time. In animal studies, however, the medication was shown to pass through breast milk in rats. If your healthcare provider recommends taking this drug while breastfeeding, make sure to watch for any side effects in your nursing child.

Can I Take Orencia While Breastfeeding?

It is unknown if Orencia® (abatacept) passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of starting, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider first.

What Does the Research Say?

Studies have shown that Orencia passes through breast milk in rats, but it is not known if the same is true in humans. The medication has not been studied in breastfeeding women, and it is not known whether it would cause any problems in nursing infants. If your healthcare provider recommends that you take Orencia while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your infant.

Discussing Breastfeeding and Orencia With Your Healthcare Provider

You should talk with your healthcare provider about Orencia and breastfeeding. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision about Orencia and breastfeeding that is right for you.
