Drug Interactions With Piroxicam (Cont.)

Interactions With Piroxicam Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur if piroxicam is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven)
If you are taking other blood thinners, such as warfarin, while taking piroxicam, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your INR and prothrombin time more frequently and adjust your dosages accordingly. INR and prothrombin time are tests used to measure how well your blood is clotting.

Other Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
Using these pain relievers with piroxicam can increase the risk of bleeding. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) products can be safely used.

Aspirin
Aspirin and piroxicam can be used together; however, studies have indicated that the chances are higher for stomach ulcers when these medicines are combined. Talk with your healthcare provider about using aspirin and piroxicam together.

ACE Inhibitors (Accupril, Lotensin, Vasotec, Altace, Zestril, Prinivil, Monopril, Capoten)
Piroxicam may inhibit the blood pressure-lowering effects of ACE inhibitors. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these drugs.

Diuretics (Torsemide [Demadex], Furosemide [Lasix], Hydrochlorothiazide)
Piroxicam may reduce the activity of diuretics. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these drugs in order to prevent an interaction.

Lithium (Eskalith, Lithane, Lithonate, Lithotabs)
Taking piroxicam and lithium together may increase the levels of lithium in your body by decreasing the removal of lithium by the kidneys. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these drugs and monitor the level of lithium in your blood.
