Ponstel Drug Interactions

Certain medicines, such as antacids or diuretics, can cause drug interactions with Ponstel. Some interactions may decrease the effectiveness of the drugs or increase Ponstel levels in the blood, while others may cause side effects such as kidney damage, bleeding, or stomach ulcers. Other medicines that may potentially lead to negative interactions include cyclosporine, beta blockers, and angiotensin II receptor blockers.

Ponstel Interactions: An Overview

Ponstel® (mefenamic acid) can potentially interact with a number of different medications. Some of the drugs that can interact with Ponstel include:
 
 
 
 
 
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), including:
 
 
  • Methotrexate (Rheumatrex®, Trexall™)
  • Beta blockers, such as:
 
  
  • Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, hydrocortisone (Cortef®), dexamethasone (Decadron®, Dexone®, Hexadrol®), and others
  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
  • Antacids, including Maalox®, Mylanta®, Riopan®, Gelusil®, and others.
 
Several herbal and nutritional supplements can also interact with Ponstel and may increase the risk of bleeding. Examples of these include but are not limited to:
