Vimovo and Breastfeeding

It is unclear if Vimovo (naproxen/esomeprazole magnesium) is harmful for breastfed infants. The naproxen component of the drug is known to pass through human breast milk in low amounts; it is not known whether the esomeprazole component also passes through human breast milk. Due to the potential risks of naproxen, the manufacturer of Vimovo recommends that women not use this drug while nursing.

Is Vimovo Safe to Use While Breastfeeding?

At least one of the active ingredients in Vimovo™ (naproxen/esomeprazole magnesium) passes through human breast milk. The manufacturer of Vimovo states that women who are breastfeeding should not take Vimovo due to the naproxen component. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics classifies naproxen as usually being compatible with breastfeeding.

If you are nursing a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider about taking Vimovo.

More Information on Breastfeeding and Vimovo

Naproxen passes through human breast milk in low amounts, probably too low to cause any problems. There has been one case of serious problems (anemia and low blood platelets) in one newborn whose mother was taking naproxen, but it is not entirely clear if these problems were the result of the naproxen or another medication the mother was taking.

It is unknown if the other active ingredient in Vimovo (esomeprazole) passes through breast milk in humans. Because laboratory tests show that the drug may increase the risk for tumors in rats, there is some concern about exposing infants to the drug.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Vimovo use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
