Vimovo Side Effects

Diarrhea, heartburn, and inflammation of the stomach lining are among the common side effects of Vimovo. However, most people are able to use this medication without any problems. If you develop any serious side effects while using this drug, such as chest pain, slurred speech, or difficulty breathing, notify your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Vimovo Side Effects

As with any medicine, Vimovo™ (naproxen/esomeprazole magnesium) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Vimovo

Vimovo has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Vimovo were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people who were taking either a different medication (naproxen) or a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medication or placebo.

In these studies, the most common Vimovo side effects included:

  • Inflammation of the stomach lining with erosion of the protective layer (erosive gastritis) -- in up to 19 percent of people
  • Indigestion or heartburn -- up to 18 percent
  • Inflammation of the stomach lining without loss of the protective layer (gastritis) -- up to 17 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 6 percent
  • Stomach ulcers -- up to 6 percent
  • Upper abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 6 percent.

Other common side effects (occurring in 2 to 5 percent of people) included but were not limited to:
